Canon to Build New Plant to Double CMOS Image Sensor Production

Canon recently announced that it will invest approximately 55 billion Yen (US$451 million; US$1=122.1 Yen) in a new plant in Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo to double its production of CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) image sensors for use in digital cameras. Canon's new plant is scheduled to start operations by July 2008 and is projected to produce three million CMOS chips annually. According to a Reuters report, these CMOS image sensors will be used in Canon's DSLRs (Digital Single-Lens Reflex cameras) and some compact models.
